Free Energy Audits and Upgrades Available for La Crosse Low Income Homeowners

The City of La Crosse has partnered with Green Homeowners United to provide free energy audits and upgrades to over 300 low-income households. This program is made possible through a $747,000 grant from the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC). Households interested in participating can find out if they’re eligible and apply at the Green Homeowners United Website.

The project will increase household energy efficiency in the city of La Crosse through complimentary home energy assessments and a menu of energy

efficiency upgrades that could include:

·      attic insulation and air sealing work

·      duct sealing and rim joist sealing in basements

·      furnace replacements, especially fuel oil furnaces, to high efficiency (96% AFUE) alternatives.

·      half-wall foundation rigid fire-rated insulation.

The funds were part of a $7.8 million grant from the PSC’s Energy Innovation Grant Program (EIGP) awarded in 2024 to 28 projects throughout the state. The EIGP will expand access to clean energy and invest in the adoption of innovative technologies and processes. Since the program’s inception in 2017, the PSC has awarded $40 million to 169 EIGP projects statewide.

The Energy Efficient Homes for La Crosse program is an example of the type of tangible initiative that meets the La Crosse Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals, providing programs and ideas that businesses and individuals can implement to reduce energy consumption and realize energy cost savings.
